BROOKLYN - The Brooklyn borough president was joined by several music artists Saturday to promote peace as anticipation builds for J'Ouvert and carnival.

The celebrations were marked by violence last year when Carey Gabay, an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was fatally struck by a stray bullet.

Borough President Eric Adams praised the NYPD for its efforts to make the celebration safer this year. He said 12 guns were removed from the streets and two notorious gang rivals were taken down in a sweep ahead of the festivities.

A group of music artists is asking people to come together and be proactive to promote peace this year.

News 12 Brooklyn will have continuing coverage of carnival celebrations this weekend and the West Indian American Day Parade on Monday.
