SUNSET PARK - A 6-year-old boy was struck and killed Thursday while crossing the street after school.

Andy Vega was crossing 3rd Avenue and was hit and killed by a truck, just two days shy of his seventh birthday. Residents in the area say they are angry because his death could have been avoided. They say a lack of crossing guards at the heavily trafficked road is to blame. P.S. 1 is located on 3rd Avenue and parents say they have never seen a crossing guard there.

Following the incident, a crossing guard was placed at the location. Parents say they are upset that it took a tragedy to get a crossing guard on 3rd Avenue.
