Broken elevator keeps tenants trapped indoors

BROOKLYN - Tenants in a seven-story Williamsburg apartment building say they've been trapped indoors for weeks as they wait for elevator repairs.

According to Esther Rosenthal and her daughter, the elevator in their Kent Village building hasn't worked in three weeks. Rosenthal is disabled and her daughter is wheel-chair bound, making it impossible for them to use the stairs.

According to property manager Robert Kotara, the elevator is more than 30 years old and it's difficult to find the parts needed for repairs. He says the building is refinancing and hopes to be able to replace the elevator with a brand new one this spring.
