Broken elevators strand tenants at BK building

CROWN HEIGHTS - Dozens of Crown Heights residents say they have been trapped in their apartment building after the three elevators inside broke down Monday evening.

Tenants say the elevator malfunctions are an ongoing problem at Tivoli Tower on Crown Street. The Department of Buildings has a record of 27 elevator complaints since Jan. 1 of this year alone.

Councilwoman Letitia James says the problem "is out of control" and has left the elderly and the disabled residents of the building stranded.

An attorney for the Tivoli Towers say the elevator issue is being worked on and will not be solved overnight. The DOB issued violations and a criminal court summons for the owner of the building.
