Brookdale health workers picket in protest of owner

BROOKLYN - Health care workers walked off the job and onto the picket line Tuesday at Brookdale University & Medical Center.

According to 1199SEIU union members, the hospital is outsourcing services to Queens hospitals owned by Medisys Health Group. The group took over Brookdale hospital about seven years ago.

Workers said Medisys is moving vital jobs out of the area in an effort to downsize. Union members also complain the hospital has shifted from being a community hospital to one that limits which insurance it will accept.

In a statement, the CEO of Medisys Health Group said only six home health care employees were moved to Jamaica Hospital. The CEO said the move was meant to safeguard services, not cut jobs.
