State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says his office has received a letter of resignation from Assemblyman Vito Lopez (D-Brooklyn), to take effect on Monday at 9 a.m.

Lopez, who has been accused of sexual harassment by former female staffers, had said yesterday that he intended to resign next month. He said he wanted to focus on a run for City Council.

His resignation comes amid growing calls for him to step down. Yesterday, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver released a resolution calling on the Assembly Standing Committee on Ethics and Guidance to immediately review a blistering report on Lopez from the state's Joint Commission on Public Ethics and recommend sanctions. The Assembly was expected to vote on the resolution Monday when it convenes again.

Silver's office said it received Lopez's letter via fax.
