EAST FLATBUSH - Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes has created a new taskforce to prevent medical fraud in the borough.

The taskforce comes after Dr. Naveed Ahmed allegedly stole $500,000 from Medicare and Medicaid. Investigators say recruiters would bring in bogus patients, who would be given AIDS prescriptions from Ahmed. The doctor would then bill Medicare and Medicaid for procedures he never performed.

The bogus patients, who would be paid for their time, would then sell the medication on the streets. Ahmed's scam was uncovered after a three-year investigation and some undercover work.

The taskforce will be a collaboration between local and federal agencies to investigate and prosecute health care providers who commit fraud.

Ahmed and nearly two dozen others were charged with fraud and grand larceny.
