BROOKLYN - A Brooklyn firefighter who died while trying to rescue people from a burning building was honored Wednesday afternoon.
Lt. Gordon Matthew Ambelas died last July after becoming trapped while battling flames at an apartment building on Wilson Street. He was 40 years old.
His family was present as the department dedicated a plaque with his name at the Williamsburg firehouse where he served. It is the same firehouse where the fallen firefighter was recognized for helping to save a 7-year-old boy who became trapped in a roll-down gate two months before his death.
Community members who attended the ceremony say they could never repay the lieutenant for the sacrifice he made and would keep him in their memories.
