BROOKLYN - Many Brooklyn firehouses may be losing one of their own as a staffing shakeup goes into effect at midnight.

The FDNY says it plans to take away the fifth firefighter at 14 of the largest engine companies throughout the borough. The change would place four firefighters and one officer at each firehouse.

The firefighter unions say they plan to take legal action to stop the cost-cutting measure. Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy says the plan is unacceptable to public and firefighter safety.
