BROOKLYN - Fire officials urged Brooklyn residents to be safe as Fire Prevention Week started Sunday.

The National Fire Protection Association says one person is killed in a fire every 135 minutes. Officials say there are several things homeowners can do to keep safe. They include installing smoke detectors, having fire extinguishers nearby and knowing how to use them.

Residents are also urged to plan an escape plan and test it out with their family members.
