BROOKLYN - A merger between Long Island College Hospital and Suny Downstate Medical Center will keep thousands of jobs in the borough.

LICH was previously in danger of being closed down. The merger prevents the closure and saves about 2,500 jobs in the Cobble Hill neighborhood.

The merger marks the first time a private hospital has been taken over by a public institution.
