Brooklyn jail to reopen, but not expand

BROOKLYN - ? The Brooklyn Detention Center will reopen but not expand, according to the Department of Corrections.

Early plans had called for doubling its size, but met resistance from residents.

The department was planning on expanding the jail from more than 700 beds to approximately 1,500. However, a judge ordered a lengthy land-use and public review process if the department wanted to expand.

The jail has been closed since 2003.
