BROOKLYN - Police say a Brooklyn man was killed at a gym after a minor scuffle escalated into an all-out attack Saturday night.

Two men jumped 50-year-old Douglas Smith inside Church Avenue Fitness Club, hitting him in the back of the head with a hammer and stabbing him multiple times in the back, authorities say. Smith was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where he later died.

Neighbors say Smith worked in the city's welfare office and he was attending night school to finish his master's degree.

Police arrested 19-year-old Shawn Hing and charged him with second-degree murder. The gym management says it is working with police while they investigate and there are several video cameras in the gym that may have captured the attack.
