Brooklyn pupils, educators gear up for new school year

BOROUGH HALL - Many Brooklyn students and teachers are buzzing with excitement as they await the start of the school year.

The NAACP gave out hundreds of free backpacks at Borough Hall Wednesday. Across town at Brooklyn Tech High School, new teachers got a warm welcome from the United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.

Borough President Marty Markowitz says going to school helps instill a sense of community and self respect in students. The school year starts September 5.
