Brooklyn residents rally at Brooklyn Bridge for peace in Ukraine

Violent crashes between Ukrainian demonstrators and police have been plaguing Kiev. (2/22/14)

BROOKLYN - Brooklyn residents gathered at the Brooklyn Bridge today to rally for peace in Ukraine.

For the past several weeks, Ukrainian demonstrators have held fiery protests in the capital of Kiev calling for the president's resignation. Officials said Saturday that the death toll in clashes between Ukrainian protesters and police had reached 82.

Some Ukrainian-Americans said they showed up at today's rally in Brooklyn to call for freedom and human rights in Ukraine. Non-Ukrainian residents also came to show support.

Many demonstrators say they will continue to participate in events supporting Ukrainian civilians for as long as it takes for change to take place.
