RED HOOK - A rustic, yet contemporary way to display food is the inspiration behind a growing business in Red Hook.

The Brooklyn Slate Company uses pieces of slate from an upstate rock quarry as food-ready serving trays for coasters, cheeses and other appetizers. Kristy Hadeka and Sean Tice, who founded the company four years ago, primarily sold their slate online before the popularity of their product warranted a walk-in location in Brooklyn.

"We realize it's a great community and we thought having a storefront here was a perfect fit," says Tice.

The duo will also sell other kitchen items and products all made in Brooklyn.

Their grand opening will be Saturday, April 13 at 305 Van Brunt St. in Red Hook.
