Brooklyn teen gets surprise scholarship

BED-STUY - A very surprised Brooklyn girl proudly accepted a scholarship in her school auditorium yesterday.

Narita Shelton, a senior at Brooklyn Academy High School, won a $5,000 scholarship to further her education. The proud senior is on her way to SUNY Cortlandt in the fall to study psychology. For six years she volunteered with Publicolor, a non-profit group that paints murals over graffiti. The group nominated Shelton for the scholarship.

Shelton is also eligible for the Sun Life National Rising Star Award, which is worth $50,000. She'll compete in an essay contest with students from all over.
