Brooklyn woman killed by falling tree on LI

FLATBUSH - The powerful nor'easter that hit Brooklyn and Long Island Saturday is being blamed for the death of an elderly woman.

Suffolk police say 73-year-old Julia Hughes, of Flatbush, was leaving a family birthday party on Lanier Lane in Bay Shore when the strong winds and heavy rain knocked over a maple tree that fell on top of her and killed her. Neighbors say the tree stood at least 100 feet tall.

Family members and neighbors tried to administer CPR, but Hughes was pronounced dead at nearby Southside Hospital.

The storm is also being blamed for other deaths in the northeast.
