BROOKLYN - Some Brownsville parents are concerned after they say their kids' school water tested positive for lead.

Parents of students P.S. 189 say they received an automated call Friday morning alerting them that lead was found in the school. Five out of 94 water samples found elevated lead levels.

The school's principal says the lead was found in a couple of lab sinks, and the students were told not to drink water out of an abundance of caution.

The discovery was apparently the result of the city's efforts to retest all public schools for lead this winter. The state previously issued new rules for testing water for lead in schools.

The city says the water systems at P.S. 189 will be flushed and retested to ensure that it is safe.

"We have stringent protocols and robust procedures in place to ensure that water in school buildings is safe for students and staff," the Department of Education said in a statement. "This is standard protocol and there is no reason for alarm: we are continuing to provide students and staff with safe drinking water."
