BROOKLYN - A Brownsville teenager spent Wednesday recovering at Brookdale Hospital after being shot in the chin by a police officer.
According to authorities, the shooting happened at East 94th and Winthrop streets Tuesday afternoon when Akeem Harvey, 18, who was attempting to evade officers, pointed a revolver at them. One of the officers ordered Harvey to drop the weapon and fired his gun, hitting the teen once in the chin. The bullet then traveled to Harvey?s chest.
Harvey?s family, however, insists the teen did not have a gun in his possession at the time of the incident.
?I didn't see no gun or anything like that,? says Roland Pain, Harvey?s cousin. ?They tried to stop him, but he didn't want to stop. The next thing you know, they shot him.?
Police say Harvey was wearing gang colors in a neighborhood known for gang activity and was carrying a bullet case.
Investigators say the officers acted within department guidelines. The NYPD officer who fired the shots was treated for trauma at Methodist Hospital.
