Brownsville tenants heated over no gas in apartments

BROWNSVILLE - After a month of not having any gas in their apartments, furious tenants stood outside the Marcus Garvey Houses today in anger.

Keisha Cole, who is home on disability, says she is afraid to use the hotplates that NYCHA handed out to people living in the building. She says she fears the pots and hotplates could accidentally topple onto her 5-year-old son.

Many of these tenants say only one eye of their hotplates work, so it's almost impossible to cook a decent meal for their families.

Officials say 117 tenants haven't had gas since a leaking gas valve caused management to shut down all the lines in the entire building.

NYCHA says plumbers are currently replacing those lines and everything should be back in working order within the next two weeks.
