Cars torched, hate symbols painted in Midwood

Police are investigating a possible hate crime in Midwood after someone set fire to three vehicles and painted anti-Semitic symbols on Ocean Parkway near Avenue

BROOKLYN - Police are investigating a possible hate crime in Midwood after someone set fire to three vehicles and painted anti-Semitic symbols on Ocean Parkway near Avenue I this morning.

The FDNY first responded to the scene at around 5 a.m. and put out the flames that left three cars burned almost beyond recognition. Authorities say swastikas were then found spray painted on six benches and the sidewalk, and a fourth vehicle was sprayed with "KKK."

Officials say the letters "SS" were also spray painted in the area, which represents the paramilitary organization under Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime.

Police say they found several empty beer bottles in the vicinity of the torched cars, which could offer clues in the case. They are also looking at surveillance video from the area.

Neighbors and several community officials, among them Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-48th District), say they're outraged and worried about what might happen next.

Police are also stepping up patrols and urging anyone who knows something to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
