NEW YORK - (AP) - New York State Education Commissioner DavidSteiner has granted a waiver to let media executive Cathie Blackhead New York City's school system. The announcement Monday came after Mayor Michael Bloombergagreed to appoint a seasoned educator as second-in-command toBlack. Black needed a waiver from Steiner to serve as schoolschancellor because she has no credentials as an educator. Anadvisory committee appointed by Steiner opposed the waiver. A compromise was reached Friday when Bloomberg agreed to appointShael Polakow-Suransky as seniordeputy chancellor and chief academic officer under Black. Polakow-Suransky, a current deputy chancellor, has served as ateacher and principal.
