WILLIAMSBURG - Several businesses in Williamsburg were evacuated Thursday after chemicals were found above a clothing store in the district.

Fire officials found the chemicals during a routine investigation of Hyperactive, a sneaker and clothing store. Not knowing how dangerous the chemical was at the time, assistance was requested.

Police and representatives were called in from the Department of Environmental Protection to investigate. The bomb squad unit was also called in to determine whether the suspicious chemical was explosive.

The chemicals were ultimately ruled not to be dangerous. Employees were allowed to return to work by the evening.

Authorities say the building formerly served as a dentist's office, which may explain the presence of the chemicals.
