City airports ready for next winter blast

NEW YORK - (AP) - Officials with the Port Authority of NewYork and New Jersey, which operates the three major New Yorkmetropolitan area airports, say all are ready with equipment andsupplies for the approaching snowstorm.

Spokesman Ron Marsico says standard storm preparations are underway, and no major changes have been ordered since the last storm.More than 200 pieces of heavy snow equipment, including multi-useplowers, are available, as well as snow melting machines than canliquefy up to 500 tons of snow an hour.

There are also 2,000 tons of salt, and more than 1,500 tons ofsand available for airport roads and parking lots.

Marsico says airport terminals usually remain open duringinclement weather, even if flights are grounded.
