NEW YORK - The City Council has passed a resolution asking state lawmakers in Albany to let religious groups worship in public school spaces during off-hours.

In a 31-11 vote, city officials said that preventing the groups from renting space in schools is discrimination because other organizations are allowed.

Opponents have long argued that it would interfere with the separation of church and state.
