CROWN HEIGHTS - Brooklyn shoppers and businesses will seen cleaner streets, sidewalks and store fronts thanks to a new initiative implement by the city.

The New York City Clean Streets Program comes courtesy of the city?s Department of Small Business Services. Wednesday through Sunday, workers can be seen on the streets of Washington Avenue between Atlantic and Eastern Parkway sweeping sidewalks, cleaning up and even shoveling snow if necessary.

Officials say keeping the streets clean is vital to ensure a positive quality of life and strong business climate in neighborhoods across Brooklyn.

Merchants love the new program. They say it is great for the neighborhood and creates jobs for the city.

Currently the city is providing the service free of charge. However, after the first two years of the program, the businesses will have to pay for the cleaning services.
