CANARSIE - The city issued a snow alert in anticipation of the year's first snowfall Tuesday.

The Department of Sanitation took special preparations to deal with snow during the evening rush.

Crews loaded salt spreaders and attached plows to trucks earlier in the day.

The Sanitation Department also coordinated with the Office of Emergency Management to keep streets clean and safe.

In Canarsie, News 12 cameras spotted residents bundled up in layers of clothing and walking quickly for warmth. 

"It's kind of cold," said Octavius O'Connor. "I miss the winter -- it feels real good."
