City to demolish Prospect Plaza Houses

BROWNSVILLE - City officials announced Monday the Prospect Plaza Houses will be demolished to make room for lower, more suburban buildings.

The decision comes seven years after residents were moved out to make way for a renovation of the existing structure. According to the New York City Housing Authority, it will be the first time the city will knock down an entire housing complex.

Residents say replacing the building with fewer apartments is unfair to those who lived in the complex before. NYCHA is expected to hold workshops with former residents in the spring to discuss housing options.

The demolition could take place in late 2010.
