MILL BASIN - City officials and the leading yellow bus union are still at odds as the second day of the bus driver strike continues.

Workers on the picket line in Mill Basin say Mayor Michael Bloomberg has the power to throw them life preservers in the form of an employee protection provision. It would guarantee that workers with seniority keep their jobs now that the city is bidding out school bus contracts for the first time in more than 30 years.

But Bloomberg has repeatedly said that move would be illegal.

Striking workers say they're barely surviving, living paycheck to paycheck. They are not being paid while on strike.
