BROOKLYN - Brooklyn residents paid tribute tonight to Nelson Mandela at a tree lighting ceremony in Flatbush.

Residents lit a tree at the Flatbush Caton Market to celebrate the holiday spirit and pay tribute to the former South African leader.

Members of the largely African-American and Caribbean community say they honored Mandela for spending 27 years in prison to fight apartheid in South Africa.

The market will also be holding a Kwanzaa celebration later this month where they will also honor Mandela and celebrate African culture.
