BAY RIDGE - Community leaders in Brooklyn are pushing to expand ferry services to Bay Ridge and Coney Island.

The popular East River Ferry services 1 million customers and would bring a much needed boost to Bay Ridge and Coney Island businesses. Councilman Vincent Gentile points out that the area once had a commuter ferry service to Manhattan, but it disappeared when the pier was renovated 13 years go.

City officials are firing back, saying that other attempts to expand ferry service have failed because of low ridership and high ticket prices.

As of right now, ferry service from northern Brooklyn neighborhoods is a pilot program that there are no plans to expand.
