Concrete to replace wood on Coney Island boardwalk

BROOKLYN - Coney Island residents are concerned after city officials have announced they want to replace the iconic wooden boardwalk with a concrete walkway.

The city says concrete is cheaper and more durable, but residents say the switch will damage the history and character of the area.

The Parks Department says wood is being phased out because in 2007 Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered city agencies to reduce the use of hardwoods in city projects.
