BROOKLYN - One man was taken to the hospital today after being rescued from a fire in Coney Island.

Officials say the fire started at around 6:30 a.m. at 31-94 Bayview Ave. at the Gravesend Houses. They say a man in his 20s was rescued by firefighters from his third-floor bedroom and taken to Coney Island Hospital, where he's listed in critical condition.

Ladder 161 was first to respond to the fire. It is one of eight Brooklyn engine companies in danger of closing under Mayor Michael Bloomberg's budget cuts. Firefighters there say that the next crew to respond arrived five minutes later, which could have turned the fire into a fatal one.
