Coney Island hosts annual sand sculpting competition

Hundreds of people headed to the beach at Coney Island today to watch sculptors turn the sand into art at the 23rd annual Sand Sculpting

CONEY ISLAND - Hundreds of people headed to the beach at Coney Island today to watch sculptors turn the sand into art at the 23rd annual Sand Sculpting Competition.

Adults and children competed in the contest in five different categories as they sculpted 50 pounds of sand into different creations. Each group is competed for cash prizes.

Sculptors were encouraged to think outside the box, so it wasn't just castles in the sand. A crab, an octopus and a mermaid were among the creations.
