CONEY ISLAND - Organizers of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade are ramping up their effort to save the annual celebration.

Coney Island USA, a not-for-profit group that develops and produces a number of summer events, needs to come up with $100,000 or the parade will be canceled for the first time in 30 years. It says the massive budget shortfall is due to the Superstorm Sandy recovery effort.

The group has launched a campaign online where donors can help fund the parade and receive special packages for their support.

The parade is scheduled for June 22.

As of May 7, more than 200 parade backers have raised over $10,000.
