BROOKLYN - The Coney Island YMCA opened its doors to the public today.

The highly anticipated space is the first YMCA in Coney Island.

The 44,000-square-foot facility overlooks the historic boardwalk and includes the YMCA's largest aquatic center.

Athletes in the area can hit up the brand new gymnasium and families can enjoy the colorful multipurpose room.

The directors of this YMCA hope it provides opportunities and support for children and adults in the area.

"There have been many seniors coming in and many young people, so we're really excited. This is a great thing in Coney Island," says Samuel Moore, the executive director of the Coney Island YMCA.

The Coney Island YMCA took two years to build, with some delays after Superstorm Sandy.
