RED HOOK - A construction supervisor is lucky to be alive after he fell nearly 20 feet into a hole on a construction site today in Red Hook.

Officials say the man lost his balance on a ladder and fell into the hole just after noon.

Crews were able to rescue him and take him to the hospital, where he is expected to be OK.

The man was fortunate to have only fallen so far since firefighters say the hole was actually 12 stories deep.

The Department of Environmental Protection says that there have been no prior injuries at the site and the incident appears to be an unfortunate accident.

Crews at the site say the project was to repair sewer lines for the Gowanus Canal.
