EAST NEW YORK - Authorities say the gunman who opened fire on an East New York auto shop owner had ties to the Luchese crime family and left behind suicide notes.
The NYPD today released video that appears to show 49-year-old Carl Lastorino approaching Peter Argentina, the owner of Peter's Tires and Rims Shop, before pulling a gun and shooting.
Argentina, who was shot in the hand and shoulder, was able to evade further injury by running through his shop.
Police say Lastorino hopped into a livery cab a few blocks away. When Lastorino was later confronted by police, he allegedly pointed his gun at two officers and was shot to death. Cops say Lastorino told his mother he had a job to do andwouldn't be back. They say the 45-year-old also left a note for hissister, saying he could no longer continue life as a failure.Lastorino's father was a capo in the Luchese crime family andserved time, but authorities don't believe Lastorino was involvedin the mob.
An employee from the auto shop says Argentina is recovering and he will be back at work as soon as possible. AP wire services contributed to this report
