BROWNSVILLE - Police say a Brownsville man was arrested today after officers discovered an explosive device inside a safe in his apartment.

According to authorities, officers responded to a call at 53-year-old Ramon Lopez's apartment after his wife accused him of beating her. Police say when they arrived at 595 Howard Ave., Lopez was in possession of a loaded revolver. Officers then found a homemade explosive in a safe in the apartment.

More than 200 residents were evacuated from the building while detectives investigated. Tenants have since returned to their homes.

Police say Lopez is charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at Kings County Hospital.
