Cops look for Prospect Park sexual assault suspect

BROOKLYN - Police are looking for the man they say sexually assaulted a woman in Prospect Park Friday.

The woman claims she was with a friend near the park?s ball field when a stranger approached them around 1:15 a.m. She says the man then assaulted her.

Reports suggest the suspect either had a gun or showed a gun. Police responded to the scene and the victim was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital.

News of the attack surprised park-goers who said they generally consider the area very safe.

?I run in the park in the nighttime, I run in the park in the daytime...and I never experienced something like that,? resident Anthony Denny said.

If there is one aspect of the attack that concerns area residents, they say it's the timing. The attack occurred right as the summer park season is kicking off. They say, above all else, they hope this is not the start of a trend.

Police have not released information on a suspect in the case.
