Cops ramp up search for Brownsville gunman who shot man on Mother Gaston Boulevard

The shooting happened near a school in broad daylight, and is around the corner from where teens were wounded in a separate incident last month. (1/15/14)

BROOKLYN - Police are stepping up their search for the gunman who shot a man in broad daylight, right near a school in Brownsville.

Authorities say a 23-year-old man was hit in the torso Tuesday afternoon at 360 Mother Gaston Blvd., which is part of the Glenmore Plaza Houses. He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition.

Community activists denounced the violence, saying that it's becoming too common in the neighborhood. They say it's especially troubling because the gunfire erupted near a school at around the same time when kids could be in the area.

The site of the shooting is also around the corner from where several teens were shot last month while on their way to a party.

The suspect fled the scene on foot. It's remains unclear what sparked the incident or if the victim was targeted.
