A man was fatally shot in the chest by his landlord at a Shepherd Avenue apartment building following an argument.

EAST NEW YORK - A dispute between a tenant and his landlord took a deadly turn this afternoon, according to officials.

Police say Luis Martinez, 51, was shot in the chest by his landlord at a Shepherd Avenue apartment building following an argument. The man was already dead when cops arrived.

Neighbors say the landlord is 63-year-old Felipe Estevez from the Dominican Republic, who has lived by himself in the neighborhood for about 10 years. Tenants think Estevez was renting the victim a room in his home.

Officials say Estevez owns the gun used in the dispute that started because Martinez was behind on rent.

Police are still investigating the incident, and they say the landlord is in custody awaiting charges.
