BROOKLYN - City Council members and advocacy groups are upset over the city’s use of the term “mentally retarded” in committees and documents.

The term can be found in the name of one of the City Council’s committees, the Committee on Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and Disability Services, as well as on city health and education documents.

Council members like Councilman David Greenfield want to swap “mentally retarded” for “developmentally disabled.”
