Councilman Barron announces run for speaker

BROOKLYN - City Councilman Charles Barron announced Sunday that he will run for speaker of City Council.

Barron gathered with his supporters, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, on the steps of City Hall to declare his candidacy. He will run against current Speaker Christine Quinn, who has previously run uncontested.

Barron says he thinks the city's current leadership is acting against the best interest of the people.

City Council members will vote on the new speaker in January.
