EAST NEW YORK - A suspect has been identified and arrested in the stabbings of two children in East New York.

Authorities believe Daniel St. Hubert, 27, is responsible for murdering 6-year-old Prince Joshua Avitto and injuring 7-year-old Mikayla Capers. The incident happened just before 6 p.m. Sunday.

A police source told News 12 they were able to track him down through his cellphone. Police say they apprehended and arrested St. Hubert in a residential area of Queens near JFK.

There was clapping and cheering from community members and the victims' families after hearing the news. At a press conference earlier today, Avitto's mother thanked the NYPD for nabbing the suspect.

St. Hubert is expected to be held for extensive questioning at the 90th Precinct in Williamsburg. He has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and possession of a graffiti instrument, among other charges.

Authorities say forensic evidence was found at the crime scene that connected St. Hubert to the crime. St. Hubert is also being investigated in connection with last Friday's stabbing death of 18-year-old Tanaya Copeland.

Additionally, police say they are looking into another stabbing incident that happened on a No. 1 Train in Manhattan Wednesday.

St. Hubert has nine prior arrests and is currently on parole for assault. He was just released from jail on May 23.

Capers' great-grandmother says the little girl is doing OK, but has a long recovery ahead. Relatives of both children say they are devastated and struggling to hold it together.
