NEW YORK - It's the final day for New York City parents to get their young scholars enrolled in free pre-kindergarten for the fall.

The deadline to apply online is midnight, but anyone looking to fill out their forms in person at an education enrollment office only has until 3 p.m. The universal pre-K program is not being handled on a first come, first serve basis, so all applications received before the cutoff will be treated the same.

Anyone with a child turning 4 years old this year is encouraged to get the application submitted. Mayor Bill de Blasio says that more than 53,000 children will have a full day of pre-K this fall after $1.5 billion in the state budget was secured over the next five years.

Admission decisions will be sent out to families in June. Pre-registration will take place between June 9 and June 20, and then families will be able to apply for public pre-K seats directly at schools.
