BEDFORD-STUVEYSTANT - The death of a 1-month-old baby girl who was found covered in bruises inside a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment has been ruled a homicide.

The parents of Nichelle Warring were taken into police custody Wednesday on unrelated charges, but they are both being looked at as potential suspects in the case.

On June 26, 2016, police say 20-year-old Kenesha McCroskey called 911 saying she found her daughter in her crib not breathing, covered in bruises and had blood coming from her nose. She was taken to Woodhull Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police sources say McCroskey and the baby's father, Hakeem Warring, have been questioned about the incident ever since, and they both have been arrested numerous times.

Neighbors say another child was living in the apartment at the time of Nichelle’s death, but it is not clear where the child is now.

One neighbor says the day after the baby's death, McCroskey invited people over to the apartment and they were drinking and smoking.

News 12 has been told the reason it took so long for the medical examiner’s office to declare the death a homicide, is because they were waiting on the results of additional testing.  The official cause of death is battered child syndrome.

News 12 reached out to the Administration of Children Services, and it says the case is deeply troubling, and it is working with the NYPD on the investigation.
