BROOKLYN - Unwanted holiday gifts made their way back to the return desk at stores across Brooklyn today, and retailers are looking to get rid of all the merchandise they didn't sell before the holidays.

Local stores are offering deep discounts to boost their sales numbers over the last few days of the year. Shops along Fulton Street are trying to lure customers in with sales of up to 60 percent off.

A report by MasterCard advisors SpendingPulse shows spending this holiday is up only moderately over last year. Sales of electronics, clothing, jewelry and home goods were well below the 3 percent that analysts predicted, marking the worst year-over-year spending performance since 2008.
