BROOKLYN - Dozens of city residents rallied in Brooklyn's Cadman Plaza Wednesday to support victims of sexual abuse.

The activists are showing solidarity by wearing denim, a reference to an overturned rape conviction in Italy during the 1990s, when a court ruled the victim's jeans were too tight.

Victims participating in the rally say other victims should never blame themselves for sexual violence.

"It's not about being depressed, it's about uplifting yourself and making yourself feel better and it took me years to realize that," one survivor says.

The nonprofit organization Peace Over Violence says it has been running the Denim Day campaign for nearly 20 years. The rally is followed by a march over the Brooklyn Bridge.
